Police investigating the disappearance of a Cumbrian aid worker on the island of Bali, have confirmed she had previously been the victim of violence.

Kate Osborne, 35, from Carlisle, has not been seen since 18 April.

Detectives from Cumbria Police are on the holiday island with Ms Osborne's parents Patrick and Liz, from Carlisle.

Detective Chief Inspector, Bill Whitehead, said he now had evidence that Ms Osborne had been subjected to attacks from her Peruvian boyfriend.

Interpol is helping to trace 35-year-old surfer Jose Henricci, who has also not been seen since she disappeared.

Nightclub bombing

Mr Whitehead said he had spoken to Ms Osborne's maid in Bali, who confirmed Mr Henricci "had something of a temper".

He said: "The maid confirmed there had been previous incident of violence.

"She said there was a stormy relationship between Jose and Kate and that this was one way, with Jose having something of a temper."

Mr Whitehead also said Mr Henricci had at least three aliases and had recently rented a safety deposit box in an assumed name.

He said: "As you can imagine this is not without its frustrations when you are trying to track down records with the immigration service."

Ms Osborne moved to Bali nearly four years ago, teaching English and then acting as a translator following last October's nightclub bombing.

Mr Whitehead said officers now had an address for Mr Henricci's parents in Peru.

Ms Osborne's father Patrick said the trip to Bali had "got rid of the red herrings".

He added: "We have talked to some witnesses who saw Kate and we are still hopeful that we can find out what exactly happened to her.

"We really do think that our being here is helping."
