Ericsson asked to alter decision

The government has said it has had talks with Ericsson to see if it can alter the firm's decision to leave Coventry, with the loss of 700 jobs.

The telecommunications company announced on Tuesday it was moving from its Ansty base, after only six months, as it was "no longer viable".

The issue was raised in the House of Commons by Coventry MPs Jim Cunningham and Geoffrey Robinson.

Consumer Affairs Minister Kevin Brennan said the talks were taking place.

He said the government regretted the firm's decision to leave Coventry although the company did remain a large investor in the UK.

"Nevertheless, the jobs involved are highly skilled and will be a great loss in the West Midlands so we are currently in discussion with the firm to see what the government could do to try to alter its decision," he said.
