Asha Banton has dedicated his flat to Africa with an extensive collection

A Coventry man's passion for Africa and extensive 30-year art collection from the continent is the subject of a new exhibition in Coventry.

Asha Banton, a DJ and youth worker, has turned his Hillfields flat into a shrine to Africa with sculptures, paintings, textiles and trinkets.

A photographic exhibition of his collection opens at the city's Fishbone Gallery on Saturday.

Mr Banton said people say visiting him is "like entering another world".

He added that being in his flat "makes me feel happy - like a child in a candy shop".

Mr Banton said he was inspired to collect things by his grandmother, who collected china cups and glasses.

The DJ, who was at the heart of the Ska movement to emerge from Coventry in the late 1970s, has also dedicated an area of his flat to music.
