Labour gains seat in by-election

The Conservative party has lost a seat on Warwickshire County Council after its winning candidate was forced to resign just days after local elections.

Councillor Tom Wilson won a seat in Arbury and Stockingford in the Nuneaton and Bedworth district on 4 June.

He stood down after a complaint by Nuneaton Labour Party about him being employed by the county council when he submitted his nomination form.

Labour candidate Barry Longden won the seat in the by-election on Thursday.

Mr Wilson resigned as a chaperone to vulnerable people on bus services on 7 May two days after submitting his form, a Conservative spokesman said.

The Conservatives gained control of the county council, where no party has been in overall control for 16 years.
