City centre subway repairs start

Ironmonger Row
A subway underneath the road is causing problems

Work to shore up an underground subway in a city centre, which is in danger of collapsing, is getting under way.

A £3.6m project to refurbish Ironmonger Row and the Burges into a new public square in Coventry, had to be halted when the structural problem was found.

A large dug-up area in the road was left for about a year while tests and discussions were held.

The subway, which is about 50 years old, acts as a service area for the nearby Primark store.

Once the structural work is completed, work on the new square can continue.
