A man who died after being found on a pavement with a head injury was robbed beforehand, police said.
Paul Smith, 54, from Biart Close, Rugby, Warwickshire, was found lying in Clifton Road in the town on Saturday. He died later in hospital.
Police said he was robbed and died as a result of the robbery. His mobile phone and wallet are missing and police want help to trace these items.
A 15-year-old boy has been arrested and bailed over his death.
Five children
Det Supt Ade McGee said the phone and wallet could have been thrown over a wall or hedge.
Officers are still trying to trace a man captured on CCTV crossing over Murray Road. Police said he followed the same route as Mr Smith and was about two minutes behind him.
Another witness, stood at a nearby bus stop, has been traced.
Mr Smith was divorced and leaves five children and six grandchildren.
His family have issued a statement thanking a passerby who called the emergency services and to all who have helped them.
