Murder probe after man assaulted

Area cordonded off in Rugby
Police cordoned off part of the road where the man was found

A murder investigation has started following the death of man who was found lying on a pavement.

He was found with an injury to the back of his head in Clifton Road, Rugby, at 0120 BST. Officers believe he may have been hit by a stone block found nearby.

The man, aged in his 50s, was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead at 0200 BST, Warwickshire Police said.

Police appealed for any witnesses to come forward. Part of Clifton Street is closed as officers examine the scene.

Det Insp Roy Wheelwright said officers were trying to establish the circumstances of the man's death.

"We believe the victim was walking along Clifton Road away from the town centre when he was assaulted.

"We are appealing for any witnesses to the assault itself or who saw anyone acting suspiciously either near to where the assault occurred in the Clifton Road, Cambridge Street and St Peters Road area, or perhaps running away from the area in the early hours of this morning."
