Witness appeal over assault death

Police sealed off Royal Oak Lane where the dead man was found

A man who may have seen a 'vicious' beating which led to the death of a man is being asked to come forward.

Paul Merridew, 25, from Ash Green, Bedworth, Warwickshire, died in hospital after being attacked in Royal Oak Lane during Sunday night.

A 40-year-old man from Keresley has been arrested over the matter.

Police are looking for a white man in his late 20s who was standing nearby when the assault took place and who is thought to be a vital witness.

He was wearing a football-style shirt and jeans and may have had a cut on his head.

Det Supt Adrian McGee said: "We urgently need to speak to this man as he witnessed the assault and from what we know will have vital information about the immediate events which led to the death of Paul Merridew."
