Motorway death linked to stabbing

The M6 has reopened since the incident

Police are linking the death of a man, who apparently ran into motorway traffic, with a stabbing in a minibus parked on the hard shoulder.

The man was hit by a lorry travelling north on the M6 near Corley services in Warwickshire on Sunday evening.

Eighteen others suffered minor injuries and shock after six other vehicles collided immediately afterwards.

A 47-year-old man was taken to hospital with stab wounds but his injuries are not considered to be life threatening.

A 43-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault after the incident, which began at about 2110 BST, but was later released without charge.

Police said they could not be sure about what happened but believed there may have been three people on board the minibus and a rear passenger stabbed a front seat passenger and then left the vehicle.

He was hit by the lorry and several other vehicles and died at the scene.

A motorist caught up in the aftermath of the incident told BBC News there was a lot of smoke on the carriageway.

"In the fast lane were three of four vehicles and lots of smoke, lots of steam and no emergency vehicles. It had just happened as we came on (to the motorway)," the motorist said.

Ambulance crews set up a temporary medical centre at Corley services to treat the injured.

The motorway reopened some time later.

The injured man on the minibus was being treated at University Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshire for a small puncture wound to his neck.

Detectives said they would be questioning him and other people in the vehicle.

Anyone who witnessed the crash has been asked to contact Warwickshire Police.
