'Walk of fame' for Coventry stars

Coventry's famous sons and daughters are being honoured on a Hollywood-style walk of fame in the city centre.

Ten people, including music producer Pete Waterman, athlete David Moorcroft, and the late politician Mo Mowlam will be marked with plaques in Priory Place.

The honours will be unveiled at a special ceremony being held later.

Coventry residents were given the chance to vote for their suggestions. Those behind the project said they hoped it would help promote the city.

The final list of names will only be published at the ceremony.

Strong connections

However, council officials said the walk of fame would celebrate people who had brought the city recognition either nationally or internationally.

The stars did not have to be Coventry-born but must have strong connections with the city, the council said.

Other notable local figures include protester Lady Godiva, the inventor of the jet engine Frank Whittle, writer Philip Larkin and actor Clive Owen.

The city has also been home to bands including The Specials, who had a number one UK record with Ghost Town, and The Enemy.

Last year a similar "Walk of Stars" was started in Birmingham on the city's Broad Street.

Stars so far honoured there include Jasper Carrott, Ozzy Osbourne and Slade star Noddy Holder.
