People in Warwickshire are celebrating the life of author George Eliot by laying wreaths at her memorial garden, 150 years after her first novel.

The mayor and mayoress of Nuneaton and groups with a connection to her were laying wreaths on Sunday.

Eliot was born Mary Ann Evans in 1819 and lived in Warwickshire until 1849.

The author, whose first novel was Scenes of a Clerical Life, referred to Nuneaton as a place called Milby in her early works.
