Dead baby found dumped in river
River Alne
The baby's body was found in the River Alne
The body of a baby has been found wrapped in a plastic bag in shallow water in a Warwickshire river.

Police were called after a person walking nearby found the body on Thursday evening in the River Alne in Aston Cantlow near Stratford-upon-Avon.

Warwickshire Police are appealing for the mother to come forward.

Detectives confirmed on Friday that the body was that of a newborn baby girl. Results from a post-mortem examination are expected on Saturday.

Plea to mother

Det Ch Insp Adrian Pearson, of Warwickshire Police, said of the discovery: "It's a mystery at the moment, but it's a real tragedy.

"We're really concerned about Mum. We think that the baby's been born in the last few days. We're really concerned that she gets some special medical attention.

"And I probably don't think she's had that by the virtue of the fact the body's been found here."

He said police were unsure how long the body had been in the river but said it could be a couple of days.

He said to the baby's mother: "Be assured that we'll treat you very sensitively, we want to make sure that you're OK, you get the proper medical care and then we'll look about what happened later."
