Motorists travelling through a Warwickshire town have been put at risk by the theft of 60 road signs.
Road safety officers blame scrap metal thieves for the disappearance of the chevron signs from many of Stratford-on-Avon's roads.
The black and white arrows, used to warn drivers of tight bends, have been stolen in recent weeks.
Officials say taxpayers will have to foot the £9,000 bill for replacing the missing signs.
Malcolm Graham from Warwickshire County Council's safety engineering group said: "Chevrons give vital road safety messages and will be replaced as soon as possible by the county council.
"However this may take some time as so many were removed.
"Ultimately, the costs of replacing these signs will fall on the residents and businesses of Warwickshire."
Mr Graham urged people to report any suspicious activity near road signs to the police or the council.
