Work to improve the information systems on the M6 motorway in Warwickshire is beginning.
The £4.7m scheme will affect a seven-mile stretch of the road between junctions 3 and 4 and is due to be completed by spring next year.
The work will take place around the clock and a 50mph limit will be imposed, although all three lanes of the M6 will be open during the day.
The transport minister said the new system would improve journey times.
'Much-needed information'
Tony McNulty said: "By enhancing the communication system on this stretch of the motorway we will improve journey times and reduce accidents.
"When the installation of variable message signs, traffic detection loops in the road and CCTV cameras is complete they will provide information to assist in coordinating traffic flows across the network.
"This investment is part of our commitment to provide motorists with much-needed information when travelling on strategic routes."
There will be some lane closures overnight, but delays to motorists are not anticipated.
