Mother and son killed in Cornwall bungalow 'arson'

Officers carried out a forensic examination of the bungalow

A woman and her 10-year-old son have been killed in a suspected arson attack at a bungalow in Cornwall.

Patricia Philpotts, 44, was found dead at the property in the Trevarrian area of Newquay. Her son, Ben Philpotts, was taken to hospital where he died.

Mrs Philpotts' 47-year-old husband, who is also the boy's father, was detained by police and is being treated for his injuries in hospital in Bristol.

The bungalow has been cordoned off for forensic examination.

'Major investigation'

Fire crews from Newquay and St Columb were called after the fire broke out at about 0600 GMT.

The boy was found in a serious condition and taken to the Royal Cornwall Hospital where he died.

His father was taken to the same hospital before being transferred to Frenchay Hospital in Bristol.

Police said that two other people who were in the property were unharmed.

Officers said they were carrying out a "major investigation".
