Dog-friendly status helps business

Helsbury Park provides sofa throws for dogs in its accommodation

A holiday park owner in Cornwall has claimed being "dog friendly" has helped his business during the recession.

Dave Wilson, who runs Helsbury Park in Camelford, said dog owners have provided a large customer base.

The park has recently won a Kennel Club Open to Dogs award, coming top in the Somewhere to Holiday category.

The Kennel Club said most businesses recognised the possible advantages as dog owners were constantly looking for places that welcome pets.

Customer base

Club spokeswoman Caroline Kisko said: "These are tough times for businesses but more and more people are seeing the benefits of reaching out to dog owners, who are always looking for somewhere that they can go with their dogs.

"It makes no sense to exclude customers who are happy to give you their business - especially when dogs actually enhance the appeal of a place, amongst dog owners and non dog owners alike."

Helsbury Park was praised by visitors for providing throws and sofa covers for dogs as well as waste bags, doggy treats and portable drinks carriers.

Park owner Dave Wilson said dog owners helped provide a large customer base, particularly in Cornwall.

"We're based in a stunning location with walks on site as well as dog-friendly beaches nearby," he said.

"Dog owners are also pretty resilient when it comes to the weather."
