Congestion lights to be removed

Temporary traffic lights causing road congestion at a busy junction in Cornwall should be removed before Christmas, highways officials say.

Drivers have faced delays at East Hill in Pool, between Camborne and Redruth, for two months while the lights are in place for roadworks to be carried out.

A stretch of dual carriageway and a new junction are being built so that major regeneration projects can go ahead.

The East Hill junction is used by an estimated 30,000 vehicles a day.

'Significant delays'

Delays started a year ago when work started to turn the road linking East Hill with the A30 into a dual carriageway.

Congestion increased in September when the traffic lights were installed so the East Hill junction could be redesigned.

Peter Swain, from Cornwall Council, said efforts have been made to ease congestion at the junction, which is used by an estimated 30,000 vehicles a day.

He said: "Where possible we've kept work away from the peak periods of traffic.

"We've had people working in the evenings and nights to avoid traffic delays and keep the junctions flowing as best we can.

"But, inevitably, there have been significant delays."

The temporary lights are due to be taken down by 18 December.
