A man walking along a beach in Cornwall had to be rescued after getting cut off by the tide. The 52-year-old man was walking from Whipsiderry to Watergate, near Newquay, when he was stranded on Friday night. Falmouth Coastguards co-ordinated a rescue which involved RNLI lifeboats from Newquay and Padstow and a rescue helicopter from RNAS Culdrose. The man was winched up over Horse Rock cliffs because of gusting winds of up to 48mph (77kph) and head-height waves. Marc Thomas, Falmouth coastguard watch manager, said: "This was an extraordinarily difficult rescue. "The tide can turn very quickly so I'd like to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the importance of checking weather and tide tables before they set out."
