Injured surfer rescued from cove

Whitsand Bay
The surfer was washed into a cove at high tide

A surfer has been airlifted to hospital after being washed into a cove at high tide in Whitsand Bay.

Brixham Coastguard was contacted by a friend of the man who saw the 19-year-old from Saltash get trapped in the cove.

The beach, just east of Tregantle, was covered by the high tide with only rocks exposed.

The Tamar Coastguard team was scrambled along with a Sea King helicopter from RNAS Culdrose.

The man was winched into the helicopter and taken to a nearby airfield where a land ambulance took him to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth.

Brixham Coastguard said he had sustained back injuries.
