Lifeguards cover half-term break

Lifeguards will be out in force to make sure visitors at several popular beaches in Cornwall are kept safe during the half-term holidays.

Cornwall Council is funding cover on Porthmeor, Fistral and Polzeath beaches through to the end of next Sunday.

Lifeguard cover has also been extended for the same period at Praa Sands and Perranporth beach thanks to funding by Perranzabuloe Parish Council.

Cover was already extended to provide lifeguards for weekends in October.

Steve Instance, from the RNLI, said: "We are increasingly aware of more and more people taking advantage of the accessibility of cheap wetsuits and surf hire to spend time in the water later into the season.

"For the last couple of years we have kept a couple of beaches up and running, and as demand increases we are gradually seeing the traditional lifeguard season creep later and later into the year.

"It is essential that people wanting to enjoy the late weather have a choice of lifeguarded beaches at which to swim, surf, or bodyboard."
