Public inquiry into crematorium

A public inquiry has started into controversial plans to build a new crematorium in west Cornwall.

The proposals are for a crematorium and chapel at Kehelland, near Camborne.

Some residents who live near the planned site claim it would cause more traffic and pollution, and would be an eyesore in the surrounding countryside.

It is the third attempt in 14 years to secure a cemetery site near Kehelland. Two other schemes in the area were rejected by planners in 1995 and 1999.

'Achieves aims'

This is the first application at the current site.

Developers said the new facility would relieve pressure on Penmount in Truro, which currently carries out up to 15 funerals a day.

They said the planned site, just off the A30, was the ideal place.

Development managing director Richard Evans said: "When you are looking for a site, you have to deal with the fact that some of the road network in Cornwall is not very good.

"We wanted a site that would service people in Camborne, which is the main population area, and people further west. This site achieves those aims."
