Search for missing beach swimmer

Swimmer search
Both of St Ives' lifeboats have been involved in the search

Rescue crews have been searching for a missing swimmer off Cornwall.

Falmouth Coastguards said a group of four men in their 20s from the Redruth area were in the sea at Godrevy beach when one failed to get back to shore.

Despite efforts by his friends, the missing man, believed to be 21-years-old and from Scorrier, was washed away.

The search, involving coastguards, lifeguards, lifeboats and a rescue helicopter was called off as darkness fell. It will resume on Wednesday.

Emergency crews were alerted to the incident at about 1645 BST.

Both St Ives lifeboats, a coastguard cliff rescue team, a rescue helicopter from RNAS Culdrose and beach lifeguards searched the sea off Godrevy.

Lifeguards said one possibility being explored was that the man was washed into a cave inaccessible during high tides.
