RNLI step up summer beach patrols

Lifeguards patrol 92 beaches across the south west of England

Lifeguards have stepped up patrols across the south west of England as the start of the summer gets under way.

The RNLI has put on an extra 20 safety patrols which will result in them providing lifeguard cover for 92 beaches in Cornwall, Devon and Dorset.

Last year despite the poor weather, RNLI lifeguards were called to nearly 8,500 incidents across the south west and helped up to 10,000 people.

The organisation is urging beachgoers to always choose a guarded beach.

Steve Instance, RNLI Divisional Lifeguard Inspector in the south west, said: "RNLI lifeguards in the region start their peak summer safety patrols on an additional 20 beaches this weekend.

"There's every chance the region's beaches will be busier than last year and we want people to have fun at the beach but to make sure they stay safe while they're enjoying themselves.

"Our key advice for people planning a trip to the beach, especially those planning to go in the water, is to choose a lifeguarded beach and swim between the red and yellow flags, where the lifeguards can see them."
