Two people rescued in river crash

Two people have been rescued from a river in Cornwall during an incident which saw a rigid inflatable boat collide with, and sink, a moored yacht.

The two went overboard in the Penryn river and the inflatable then collided with the yacht. The pair were rescued by a helicopter from RNAS Culdrose.

They were not wearing lifejackets and were only found because someone ashore directed rescuers, the RNLI said.

A man was questioned at Camborne police station and later bailed, police said.

Navigation warnings

Falmouth Coastguard alerted the town's lifeboat, the police, a coastguard team and helicopter from RNAS Culdrose to the incident just before 0100 BST on Saturday.

There was no-one on board the moored yacht, which later sank.

Coastguards said the two in the inflatable were not seriously hurt.

Coastguard Ken Bazeley said river-users in the area were being warned of navigation hazards.

He said: "Both vessels are quite badly damaged and we're putting out navigation warnings for that fact that this yacht has sunk at its mooring with the rigid inflatable boat in the side of it."
