Dock strike threat is withdrawn

Union leaders will discuss whether to ballot members on Thursday

Dockyard workers at Falmouth will not be balloted on industrial action in a row over migrant workers, unions say.

Unions had proposed to ballot 440 of the yard's workforce about going on strike against plans to use outside sub-contractors.

Both managers at employers A&P and unions said they had made an agreement and were committed to putting the row behind them.

Managers said the yard's order book had work booked well into next year.

The Unite, GMB and Ucatt unions said they had been concerned that sub-contracted staff were being paid less than the normal workforce and were therefore getting more work because they were cheaper.
