Harbour terminal plans withdrawn

Penzance Harbour
A development plan costing £39.1m was put forward for the harbour

An application to build a new boat passenger terminal on reclaimed land in Penzance Harbour has been withdrawn by the Isles of Scilly Route Partnership.

The terminal and freight facility was proposed for reclaimed land between the harbour seawall and the Jubilee Pool to improve links with the Isles of Scilly.

After a public exhibition and debate, opponents said the plans were out of scale for the harbour.

The partnership said it was now looking at possible alternative locations.

The aim of the terminal, which was part of a £39.1m harbour development plan, was to secure the link between the islands and mainland for the future.

The partnership said it would use consultants to try and find a more acceptable site for the expansion plans and would discuss its findings with the Friends of Penzance Harbour.

The possibility of an out-of-town freight terminal was also to be examined.
