New base for Fistral lifeguards

Fistral
Work on the new lifeguard centre is due to start in the autumn

Lifeguards at one of Cornwall's most popular surfing beaches are to get a new base.

The rescuers at Fistral Beach in Newquay have been housed in a collection of temporary container-type buildings.

Work on a permanent base which is being paid for by the RNLI, is expected to start in the autumn, said Restormel Borough Council which owns the beach.

In 2008, Fistral lifeguards dealt with 322 incidents and assisted 386 people.

Council leader Annette Egerton said: "The provision of suitable accommodation up to modern day standards for beach rescue staff cannot come soon enough."
