A man who posed as an SAS war hero at Remembrance Day parades faces being thrown out of the Royal British Legion.

Tom Cattell, 74, from St Blazey, Cornwall, attended a number of services to honour the war dead wearing medals and SAS badges.

He has since admitted he was a cook during national service and had a stint in the Territorial Army.

Mr Cattell, who last week was collecting for the Poppy Appeal, said the deception was "stupid".

A spokeswoman for the Royal British Legion (RBL) said he could now have his membership cancelled.

She said: "He was pretending to serve. There will be disciplinary action taken and he could be banned from the British Legion."

Mr Cattell's deception came to light when he sent a photo of himself wearing false medals to the RAF with a request for a replacement military baton.

It is understood that officials cross-checked his military credentials and found his claims to be false.
