Fisherman killed in boat accident

A fisherman has died after an accident on board a Spanish fishing vessel off the Isles of Scilly.

Coastguards said it was believed he was hit by a piece of equipment on the vessel while it was 147 nautical miles (272km) south west of the islands.

After Falmouth coastguards were altered, a helicopter from RNAS Culdrose was dispatched to the vessel.

The helicopter picked up the man, who had an abdominal injury, but he died on the way back to land.

Coastguards were alerted to the incident at about 2330 GMT on Monday.

A Nimrod aircraft was also used in the operation to locate the vessel.
