A father and son on holiday helped rescue three young children cut off by an incoming tide at a Cornish resort.

George Farrant, from Essex, was in the water when he saw the children, thought to be aged about 10, trapped on Newquay's Towan island on Friday.

He waded through the surf and managed to bring one of the group to shore.

His father Lance then waded out to the two remaining children and waited with them on the island for the RNLI to arrive and take them to safety.

A spokeswoman for the organisation said: "He sensibly remained on the island ensuring the remaining casualties were safe and reassured."

A local surfer also helped in the rescue operation.

The RNLI said the three children were believed to be local.
