Missing girl rescued from river

A five-year-old girl has been airlifted to hospital after being rescued from a river in Cornwall.

A major search was launched at about 1240 BST after reports the girl had fallen into the river at Stratton.

Coastguard rescue teams from Bude and Boscastle were involved in the search, along with a police helicopter and an RAF helicopter from RMB Chivenor.

Resuscitation attempts began as soon as the girl was taken from the water, said police. Her condition is not known.

The girl's parents have also been taken to Plymouth's Derriford Hospital.

The rivers Neet and Stratt converge just outside Stratton.

Ronnie Jones, of the Environment Agency, said the area was on flood watch but water levels were receding.

He said there had been about 30mm (1.2in) of rain in the area in the past 24 hours and the rivers were fast flowing.
