Three thrown from boat in river

Three people were thrown out of a rigid inflatable after it hit a marker buoy in a river in Cornwall.

The boat, containing two women, three teenagers and a 10-year-old girl, hit the August Rock buoy in the Helford River at about 2300 BST on Monday.

Those thrown overboard managed to climb back inside the boat but one woman hit her head on the boat's control console.

She suffered head injuries and was transferred to lifeboat from Falmouth before being airlifted to hospital.

The boat was being sailed from Flushing to Gillan.

Both of Falmouth's lifeboats attended the scene.

The injured woman was transferred on to the all-weather lifeboat before being airlifted to the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro by a helicopter from RNAS Culdrose.

Maggie Howell, from Falmouth Coastguard, said: "Those people were luckily wearing lifejackets, which quite possibly saved their lives."
