New harbour plans go on display

The plans include a replacement for the Scillonian III ferry

Multi-million pound plans to improve sea links between Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly have gone on display.

The project by Cornwall County Council, Penwith District Council and the Duchy of Cornwall include improvements to the harbours at Penzance and St Mary's.

The Scillonian ferry and freight vessel Gry Maritha will also be replaced.

Islanders can view the plans at the Old Wesleyan Chapel on St Mary's. They will be displayed in Cornwall next week at St John's Hall in Penzance.

A tender for the contract to build the new ships has been put out by the county council.

The Department for Transport has awarded the project more than £23m, with £6.5m coming from European Objective One Convergence funding.

It was announced in March that Birse Coastal had won the contract to design the new harbours.
