Local emphasis for hospital meals

The unit opened in February

The people who produce Cornwall's hospital food say the meals are tastier and more local than ever before.

£4.6m has been invested in the Central Food Production Unit at Barncoose where local ingredients are used to produce 12,000 meals a week.

One local supplier is Callestick Farm, based near Truro, which provides ice cream to Cornwall's hospitals.

Angela Parker, from the farm, said the NHS's commitment to buying from local firms would make a real difference.

The Royal Cornwall Hospital and the smaller facilities at St Michael's in Hayle and West Cornwall in Penzance are all supplied by the unit which was opened in February.

It was built with money from Objective One and Defra.
