Waiter is jailed after bat attack

A Brazilian waiter who hit a tourist with a cricket bat in Newquay has been jailed for seven years.

Marcus Ludwig, 27, caused serious facial injuries to Mark Russell, who was visiting the resort with his wife.

Mr Russell, 28, was attacked while walking back to his hotel last November. He was knocked unconscious and suffered a fractured face.

In his defence, Ludwig told Truro Crown Court he partly blamed the stress of working during the tourism season.

Ludwig, of the Fort Restaurant, Newquay, pleaded guilty to one count of grievous bodily harm and a count of common assault.

The judge said he was recommending Ludwig was sent immediately back to Brazil on his release.
