A navy bomb squad has carried out a controlled explosion on a suspected World War II bomb in north Cornwall.

The bomb was found at Daymer Bay by a walker, Chris Osbourne from St Teath, who was using a metal detector.

The bomb disposal squad decided the best way to deal with it was to close the beach and carry out a controlled explosion.

Bomb disposal squad officers said the 2ft bomb could have been a mortar used for practise by British troops.

Mr Osbourne said: "I was a bit surprised when I dug it out.

"It was like a torpedo with fins."

A navy spokesman said there had been no immediate danger of the bomb exploding because of its age.
