Classroom in the great outdoors

Island children were consulted over the project
Children on the Isles of Scilly are going to be able to get plenty of fresh air while learning thanks to the opening of a new outdoor classroom.

The Doily Woods scheme on St Mary's has been developed by the council's Family Support Officer, Meriel Williams.

She said island children of all ages had played an active role in sharing their ideas and shaping the project.

Groups of children and their carers can access the woods for activity-based learning and play sessions.

"Children of all ages thrive whilst learning through play and find the experience of playing and being encouraged to get messy in the woods a great opportunity," said Ms Williams.

The classroom, which was developed in partnership with Isles of Scilly AONB, the Wildlife Trust, community groups and the Five Islands School, was opened officially at the end of November.
