'Wrong' paving slab base replaced
Paving slabs are having to be replaced in a Cornish town at a cost of £160,000 after the wrong type of sand was used to lay them.

The pavement slabs in the Moor area of Falmouth were laid in 2001, and have since shifted and become uneven.

The slabs were laid on china clay sand instead of a more standard base.

Cornwall County Council said the china clay sand had seemed a more environmentally-friendly option for the pavements at the time.

A spokesman said on paper it had looked like the china clay bed would work.

Work to replace the pavement is likely to go on until March.
