Mebyon Kernow winner in Caradon

Andrew Long was one of two MK candidates
Caradon District has its first Mebyon Kernow councillor for a quarter of a century but the Liberal Democrats have won control of the council.

Andrew Long topped the poll in Callington, winning 726 votes.

The Liberal Democrats made a net gain of seven seats to take control, with 23 of the 42 seats.

The Tories tripled their representation to nine seats but the Independents plummeted from 22 councillors to nine. Labour lost its only seat.

Stalwart Godfrey Smale lost his Calstock ward by 57 votes.

The Independents fielded 17 candidates this year - down from 34 in 2003. The Lib Dems contested every seat in the district.

The authority was the only Cornish council to count its votes on Thursday night.

The turn out was just over 40%.
