Planners consider golf club plan
Plans for a major re-development of a Cornish golf and country club are set to go before planners.

The owner of St Mellion, Crown Golf, wants to spend £100m upgrading the club near Saltash to attract international golf tournaments like the Ryder Cup.

But local parish councils and residents are objecting to the plans submitted to Caradon District Council.

The plans include replacing the existing hotel, as well as building 265 golf homes.

If the plans get the go-ahead, it could mean the English Open coming to St Mellion for five years from 2008.

But those objecting say the landscape would suffer and traffic problems would worsen.

They want a bypass built before the new complex is constructed.

Caradon District Council's head of development control is recommending approval because of the significant economic and tourism advantages.
