A sailor in the Route du Rhum race has been rescued from his overturned boat in the mid-Atlantic.

Falmouth Coastguards co-ordinated the rescue after receiving a distress call via satellite on Tuesday night.

Ross Hobson of Kirkley, Northumberland, was taking part in the solo yacht race from France to the Caribbean on his trimaran Ideal Stelrad.

MV Carmen, a Singapore registered ship picked him up and is taking him to Spain where it docks on Sunday.

Mr Hobson was rescued from the hull of his upturned vessel in 40 to 50 knot winds and 4m-high waves, 1,760 miles from the race finish.
