House fire after lightning strike

Local residents said the fire started during a thunderstorm

A row of terrace houses in Cornwall caught on fire after they were struck by lightning during a thunderstorm.

More than 30 firefighters were called to the building, part of a row of terrace houses at Rosehill, between Goonhavern and Perranporth.

One property's roof and upper floor were completely destroyed by the flames. Two others were damaged by smoke. No-one was injured in the blaze.

Meanwhile some roads were shut after downpours made them too dangerous.

Loud crash

At Rosehill, one house was described as "well alight" by the time fire crews from Perranporth, Newquay, Truro and Falmouth arrived at the scene.

The fire was reported just after a 1210 BST on Monday.

Neighbouring residents said the fire started during a thunderstorm, and they heard a loud crash as the flames broke out.

In Padstow, firefighters reported hail falling in the area causing problems for motorists.

There were also pockets of flash-flooding on the road between St Austell and Truro.

According to some motorists, some parts of the A390 had more than 1ft (30cm) of standing water on the surface.

There were reports of up to 18ins (45cm) of water on roads at Winnards Perch.
