Sunday's march starts at St Michael's Hospital

Campaigners are expecting thousands of people to join a march protesting at hospital cuts in Cornwall on Sunday.

More than 100 marshals will line the route through the centre of Hayle. The 1.5 mile march starts at St Michael's Hospital at 1700 BST.

The hospital is threatened with closure as the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust tries to make savings because of a forecast deficit of £31m.

The trust says it is looking at several options to reduce the debt.

They include the possible closure of St Michael's Hospital, the loss of the emergency department at West Cornwall Hospital in Penzance, or cuts in wards and services at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro.

Organisers of the march said they expected massive support from people keen to show their resistance to the loss of hospital services.

March co-ordinator John Bennett said: "About 20,000 people turned out for a march in Penzance a few years ago when 1,000 were planned for.

"We're hoping [for] at least that many this time and hopefully many more."
