Chip pans can be dangerous if left unattended
Emergency services in Jersey say too many kitchen fires are being caused by people leaving cooking appliances unattended.

The Jersey Fire Service said it was called out to two fires in the early hours of Saturday after people decided to cook while drunk.

In one, officers used breathing equipment to extinguish the fire.

The service also said it was alarmed at people using conventional chip pans which are dangerous if unattended.

Fire officers are urging people to throw away conventional chip pans and buy electric deep fat fryers instead, which stop oil from overheating.

They are also asking people not to cook if they have been drinking or if they feel very tired.
