Work begins on Tuesday on the first phase of regenerating a prominent recreation area in a Cornish town.
Just under £1m is to be spent in Helston on relandscaping the Coronation Park and the old Cattle Market area, and building a brand new cafe.
The market shut down in 2001 because of a foot-and-mouth outbreak. It was left derelict and was demolished last year.
Kerrier Council said the first phase of the improvement work should be finished by December.
It hopes to have news by September from the Heritage Lottery Fund on the second phase.
The council said a temporary cafe and toilets had been set up while the work was carried out.
It also said that an application for funding has been submitted to the Heritage Lottery Fund so that further improvements can be made to the area's boating lake.
