A Cornish couple have turned their back on more than two decades of farming to start selling pasties in Portugal.
Pasties date back to about 1300
Nicholas and Nicola Archdale have teamed up with Crantock Bakery to open their first shop in Lagos.
The pasties are all made in Cornwall at Crantock's Indian Queens bakery and are hand-crimped before being blast frozen and taken to Portugal.
Mr Archdale said: "With farming facing difficult times in Cornwall, I felt the future looked better overseas."
"I'm still passionate about Cornwall and its produce and am delighted to be able to offer good Cornish food to businesses in Portugal," he said.
Crantock's managing director, Nick Ringer, said the bakery believes the future of the pasty business lies in developing new markets whether in the UK or Europe.
"Crantock pasties can now be found across Europe from Gibraltar to Berlin," he said.
The Oxford English Dictionary suggests that the pasty was first identified in about 1300.
It became more commonplace in the 16th and 17th Centuries, and by the 18th Century was firmly established as the staple diet of working men across Cornwall.
