Pupils at a Cornish primary school will see the new interior of their school hall officially opened on Monday.

Children from Falmouth Primary School have designed the hall with the help of Grand Designs presenter Kevin McCloud.

The school is one of five in Cornwall to benefit from an initiative run by the Sorrell Foundation.

The scheme joins client teams of pupils with the UK's leading design practices to provide solutions for practical improvements in schools.

'Enormous value'

Dean Ashton, Cornwall's Director of Children, Young People and Families, said: "The aim was to transform a dreary and tired looking hall into an exciting and colourful space that could be enjoyed."

All the ideas for the hall's transformation came from the pupils who will use it.

They requested special flooring as part of their design brief as well as a new bespoke lighting system which will provide opportunities to theme the area.

The hall was also painted with special reflective paint donated by Fired Earth.

Staff and students from University College Falmouth also gave their time to the project in its concept stage.

When Kevin McCloud received the brief from the Falmouth team he said, "I am here because I love colour.

"The pupils realised they could do a lot more with coloured light than they could with paint or fabrics.

"I think there is enormous value in designers working with children as clients, it shows how it ought to be with adults, but isn't."

The hall will be officially opened on Monday after a special celebration lunch for the children and guests, including Mr McCloud.
