Two die after car plunges 30 feet

Police in Cornwall are appealing for witnesses after two people died when their car plunged 30ft onto a railway line at Looe.

A 21-year-old man from Plymouth, who was the driver, and the front seat passenger, a woman from Plympton, were both confirmed dead at the scene.

Two other female passengers in the Vauxhall Corsa are in Derriford Hospital with serious injuries.

The accident happened at about 0145 BST on Saturday.

'Strange bang'

The car went through a fence before falling onto the track, ending up on its roof.

Police say the branch line may be closed for some time as track will have to be replaced.

Tony Walters, who lives close to the scene of the accident, said: "We heard a strange bang, no screeching of brakes or anything like that then about 15 minutes later we heard the emergency services."

Pc Graeme Anderton from Devon and Cornwall Police said it was not yet clear what caused the crash.

"The collision investigator is here and there is the appeal for witnesses.

"Once we get that information we'll try and put together what happened, but at this stage we don't know," he said.
