Beer mats warn of cliff dangers

A man is recovering after falling about 20ft from cliffs in Cornwall in the early hours of Thursday.

The incident at Towan beach in Newquay is the third of its kind in the town in the past fortnight.

Two others have recently fallen from cliffs in the resort and one, a man from London, was killed.

Soon warnings about the perils of walking on the cliffs around the town are to be printed on beer mats in a bid to cut the number of people being hurt.

The beer mats will be distributed to pubs and clubs in the town.

They will have sponsored messages from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency warning drinkers of the potential dangers of the cliffs.

The Coastguard sector manager for north Cornwall, Frank Jones, blames some recent accidents on the effects of alcohol and says people out on the town must avoid cliff edges.

He said: "It doesn't mean that everybody is too drunk to read it and doesn't mean everybody is too drunk to remember a safety message they've had and that safety message needs to be just as basic as 'think about this'.

"We hope youngsters locally will take on the message, and be particularly careful when they are near the high walls and cliff sides of the beautiful Cornish landscape."
