Bird feeders may be prosecuted

Councils are assessing the extent of the seagull problem
Councillors in Cornwall say they may be forced to prosecute people to stop them feeding seagulls and other birds.

People in Saltash say the creatures are an increasing problem, harassing residents and making a mess on the town's streets.

The town council said this year it has received more complaints from local people about the noise, disturbance and mess caused by the gulls, which are nesting in a growing number of locations.

Town and district councillors say if notices urging people to stop feeding them are not effective, they will be forced to prosecute.

Councillor Steve Tait, a member of Caradon District Council's Seagull Monitoring Committee, said everyone had a responsibility to stop feeding the gulls.

'Bird scarers'

He said: "It is locals to blame as well and it's in various pockets around the town.

"What we really want to do is assess the extent of the problem to see exactly where the problems are.

"We think we know where they are, but we want to make sure we cover everywhere and we are thinking of maybe using bird scarers."

Councillors also say it is not just seagulls that are posing a problem.

In the town's Waterside area, people have been feeding pigeons and swans such large amounts of bread that councillors are concerned it could pose a health hazard.
